NIMS University's Prof. (Dr.)Balvir S. Tomar Appointed International President of World Health Summit

Jaipur:  In a significant development for India’s academic and healthcare sectors, Founder and Chancellor of Nims University,  Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar  has been appointed as the International President of World Health Summit. This appointment not only recognises the exceptional leadership and contribution of Prof. Tomar but also marks a significant achievement for NIMS University and the entire nation. This is the first time that an Indian will be representing as a President at the global conference of World Health Organization. The Chief Patrons of the Summit are German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, French President- Emmanuel Macron, and Director General of World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The World Health Summit is the international forum for global health. It brings together politics, science, and private sector from across the world to set the agenda for a healthier future by catalysing better health and development for all. It promotes global health as a key political issue and promotes the global health debate in the spirit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

With his visionary leadership and vast experience in the field of health care education and administration, Prof. Tomar is set to take the conference to new heights of success and impact. The World Health Summit will be held from 13-15 October 2024 in Berlin, Germany. Nims University has gained membership of the M8 Alliance (a group of international health universities that organises the “World Health Summit” in Germany every year).

The global forum recently lauded Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi and  Sh. Jagat Prakash Nadda , Hon'ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare for India’s vision for development, their comprehensive strategy for managing COVID-19 in India and Vaccine Maitri, strengthening the availability of beds, essential medicines and N-95 masks, PPE kits and oxygen supply, as well as the excellent healthcare system. The 79-member African, Caribbean, Pacific Group and the 15-member Caribbean Community praised India at the WTO for facilitating vaccine supplies to those in need. India has supplied 36.37 million vaccine doses to 35 countries and UN health workers under the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative.

Prof. Tomar expressed happiness over India’s selection as the host country for the World Health Summit 2025 and highlighted the country’s expertise in knowledge, science and developmental aspects. He emphasised that this decision is not only a matter of immense pride but also an important responsibility. In line with Vision 2047 which will be the dream India and developed India, Prof. Tomar underlined India's commitment to green growth and combating climate change. He expressed plans to enhance self-reliance in the defence and space sectors, enhance India's global stature, promote renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions.

As preparations for the World Health Summit 2025 begin, India has an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to foster partnerships, share knowledge and take action towards achieving universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Health Summit will serve as a platform for researchers and representatives to exchange ideas and chart a course for a healthier future. Central to this vision is the preservation of India's rich cultural heritage and identity, as well as active efforts to address serious global challenges such as climate change and promote peace and cooperation on the world stage.

In 2023, NIMS University Rajasthan joined the prestigious Executive Body of the 'World Health Summit' - M8 Alliance. This membership places NIMS University among 31 elite medical centers and institutes globally recognized within the M8 Alliance. Known as the “Inter Academy Partnership,” the M8 Alliance represents the National Academies of Medicine from over 100 countries.

M8 Alliance is a group of prestigious institutions which is dedicated to discussing important matters in health and education policy in the world as a think tank. Every year this Alliance organizes the “World Health Conference” in Germany, World Health Organization, Geneva and many other health conferences.
